While roasting at home is a lot of fun, achieving an even and consistent roast is a challenge. Here are some tips on getting the best results and truly enjoying the experience :
1. Know what you're getting into
Know the advantages and disadvantages of roasting your own coffee.
Advantages : Saving money, discovering the taste profiles of different origins, controlling your quality, guaranteed freshness, great fun.
Disadvantages : Initial investment, learning curve, the need of a kitchen exhaust fan from excess roasting smoke, finding a trustworthy and knowledgeable importer and supplier of green coffees.
2. Buy a good quality roaster
Buy a good quality roaster, capable of producing various types of roasts (light, medium dark – the more the better). You'll also need a cooling tray or cooling system to stabilize the temperature of freshly roasted beans. This will help you achieve a stable finished product. The investment will be worth it!
3. Buy quality beans from a Specialty Coffee Importer
This won't be an issue if you are buying your green beans from us! :) No matter how good your roaster is or how well you can roast, if the coffee quality is not there, roasting to perfection will not make the coffee better. Remember.. garbage in, garbage out.
4. Know that Green coffees roast differently
Green coffees roast differently depending on their origin, density, species, processing method, age and more. Our Master Roaster can advise you accordingly. Simply contact us at [email protected]
5. Learn how to properly operate your roaster
A no-brainer right? Well you'd be surprised how many people skip the instructions booklet. It is crucial to understand how your home-roaster operates. If unsure about anything, contact the manufacturer and/or get some advice from your green coffee supplier.
